Starlink, the renowned US-based satellite internet company, has teamed up with several Bangladeshi companies to assist in setting up ground stations for its internet service in the country.

This move comes as part of Starlink‍‍`s plan to bring its high-speed, reliable internet services to Bangladesh, particularly in areas that often face connectivity issues.

Faiz Ahmed Taiyeb, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Communications and Information Technology, confirmed this partnership on March 8, revealing that a representative team from Starlink is currently in Bangladesh to finalize agreements.

According to Taiyeb, the collaboration will focus on vital aspects such as land allocation, construction assistance, and the maintenance of necessary infrastructure.

Starlink has already identified several key locations for these operations, including sites owned by local companies and, in some cases, high-tech park properties.

“This partnership will ensure that Starlink‍‍`s service is not just reliable, but also unaffected by challenges like load-shedding or natural disasters,” said Faiz Ahmed Taiyeb.

He emphasized that Starlink’s high-speed internet will cover urban areas as well as remote and rural locations, including the northern and coastal regions of Bangladesh, offering uninterrupted connectivity and high-quality service.

“Since Bangladesh’s telecom infrastructure, particularly the fiber network, is still developing, and load-shedding is an ongoing issue in rural areas, Starlink’s services will greatly benefit entrepreneurs, freelancers, NGOs, and small businesses. It will also play a crucial role in speeding up the country’s digital economy initiatives,” Taiyeb added.

The government is working alongside Starlink to implement a viable model within the next 90 days.

This collaboration comes after a letter from Bangladesh‍‍`s Chief Adviser, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, to Elon Musk, the founder of Starlink and CEO of SpaceX, in which he invited Musk to Bangladesh for the official launch of Starlink‍‍`s satellite internet service.

Dr. Yunus also noted that Musk’s visit would provide an opportunity to connect with Bangladesh’s youth, who are expected to be the primary beneficiaries of this new technology.

Additionally, Dr. Yunus has appointed Dr. Khalilur Rahman as his representative to work closely with the SpaceX team to ensure that all steps for the service‍‍`s launch are completed within the next 90 working days.

Earlier, on February 13, Dr. Yunus and Elon Musk had a lengthy phone conversation where they discussed future cooperation between their teams and the progress of the Starlink project in Bangladesh.

This partnership signals a big step forward in bridging the digital divide in Bangladesh and promises to enhance internet access for millions of people across the country.
